Türkiye is a remarkable country, blending its rich history and culture in every corner of its land. Located in both Europe and West Asia, it is strategically-located and borders three seas: the Aegean Sea, the Black Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea, providing its citizens with sea, sun, and great food. As well as a top tourist destination, Türkiye is an up-and-coming economic hub, providing its nationals with a variety of opportunities in Europe, West Asia and the Middle East.
About Türkiye
The Republic of Turkey, now commonly referred to as Türkiye (previously known as Turkey) is a strategically-positioned country, located in South-East Europe and West Asia. It shares its borders with three seas (Aegean, Black, and Mediterranean), and a number of countries, including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, Iran, Iraq, and Syria, with Cyprus close by, just off the coast to the South.
There are two main cities in Türkiye: Ankara (the capital city) and Istanbul (largest city and economic hub of the country).
The country was inhabited by various ancient civilisations over many millennia until its independence in 1923 and has a rich culture and history to this day, including being home to 19 UNESCO world heritage sites. It is known as one of the top emerging and growth-leading economies in the world and is 23rd largest by nominal GDP. Türkiye began its negotiations with the European Union back in 2005, and although it is not part of the EU nations, it has many treaties in support of its jurisdiction with both the EU and other countries in the world.
Up until January 2020, the country was referred to as Turkey in English-speaking countries in the world, however, the Turkish Exporters’ Assembly (TEM) announced its preference to be officially known internationally as Türkiye. This was followed by a request with the United Nations in 2022 and was immediately approved and implemented.
