The Spanish Golden Visa Program will close by veto of the Spanish Congress
On December 19th the Spanish Congress has vetoed the vote of the Spanish Senate, which was held on December 2nd 2024, which will lead to an closing of the Spanish Golden Visa Residence-by-Investment program. After a three month transitional period, starting from the publication in the government gazette on 3rd of January 2025, the Spanish Golden Visa will ultimately close by 3rd of April 2025. Applications can be submitted latest on that day, but must be complete i.e. including proof of registration of the property under the applicant’s name with the land registry.
The meanwhile long expected decision is final now and applications for the Golden Visa in Spain are only but still possible under the old legislation until the abolishment of the old law comes into force on 3rd of April 2025.
With a purchase of property in Spain with a value of at least 500,000 EUR applicants can benefit of a Golden Visa residence permit in Spain, giving the rights to live, work, run a business and to study in Spain. The Spanish Golden Visa does not require an applicant to spend any amount of time in Spain, and thus differs from ordinary residence permits which typically require the residence permit holder to shift the center of living to the country and to spend at least six months per year in Spain.
If you plan on obtaining Spanish citizenship you must, nevertheless, reside in Spain for at least 10 years, for North- and South American citizens this requirement is reduced to two years only.
